Example: Defining and linking permissions and study access rules

The following example demonstrates how to create and link study-based permissions and their associated study access rules. For this example, the following roles are used, each containing the various users from the respective departments.

- St. Mary's

    + Radiology

        + Rads

        + Residents

        + Techs

    + Cardiology

1. Create a study-based permission

First, create a study-based permission for the Radiology role called General Rad Viewing. Because this permission is inherited by the entire department (RADS, Residents, and Techs roles), assign only general types of operations, such as viewing, to the permission.

2. Create a study access rule for the permission

Divide the studies that must be read by radiologists from the studies that must be read by cardiologists based on the modality that acquired the study.

In the General Rad Viewing permission, create one study access rule called Radiology Department. When defining the rule, set its type to Location. Then, use the Modality criteria to add the 20 modalities that acquire studies for radiology, such as CT01, CT02, MR01, MR02, and so on. That way, the General Rad Viewing permission applies to all studies that must be read by radiology.

3. Copy the study access rule to other permissions

After defining the General Rad Viewing permission for the Radiology role, create more specific permissions for the sub-roles under Radiology.

For the Rads role, create a Full Rads permission that allows more operations (such as Dictation, Markup, and so on) for the radiologists. The Full Rads permission applies to the same studies as those defined in the study access rule for the General Rad Viewing permission. So, in Radiology role, select the General Rad Viewing permission, and copy the Radiology Department study access rule. In the Rads role, select the Full Rads permission and paste the Radiology Department rule as a link. Pasting the rule as a link means that updating the study access rule in one spot updates all linked copies.

4. Copy the permission to another role as a template

Use the General Rad Viewing permission as a template, and copy and paste it to the Cardiology role. You can then edit the permission as required without affecting the original permission, including changing the study access rules associated with it. For Cardiology, the rule restricts studies to those from cardiology-specific modalities, such as XA01, XA03, CR19, CR20.

5. Update a study access rule

After setting up all the permissions, the department gets a new CT scanner, CT04. Because you copied the Radiology Department study access rule and pasted it as a link into various permissions, you can edit the study access rule in one place, either the original version or one of the linked copies. Then, all linked copies of the study access rule are automatically updated.
