While the most conservative storage method is lossless compression, lossy JPEG compression can be configured in image caches or archives:
To maintain space in the image cache but keep the original image in the archive, configure IMPAX to compress cached images after they have been archived. The compressed images are available for comparison but take up less space than the full-fidelity images would. The original images can be retrieved from the archive, if necessary.
To reduce archive space requirements or retrieval times, configure IMPAX to compress the images before they are archived. Images are compressed and then archived. After Autopilot deletes the image from cache, only the lossy version is available.
If lossy compression is enabled for archives, all archives use this setting and the lossless copy is permanently removed from the system.
