Routing: Concepts

As studies come into the system, they must be directed to specific locations such as to an archive for long-term storage or to another system. Enabling routing pushes studies to the locations that need them.

Routing refers to getting data where it must go. Essentially, routing creates rules that streamline the flow of data from the source to a cache destination on a hard drive. Routing places the workload on the system to retrieve or transmit images rather than on the user. The Network Gateway controls routing in the IMPAX cluster.

Routing requires careful planning of rules that send the images to the necessary locations either within or outside the IMPAX cluster.

All routing is set using the Administration Tools. For basic, modality-based routing, use the Routing Manager. For more complex routing, use the Routing Manager inside the Source Manager (Other tab).
