A protected study cannot be deleted from the cache by Autopilot. You can use this setting to keep studies of interest in the cache.
The protect/unprotect feature is available only when the Study Location search criteria is set to Cached. If you query for System studies, the protect/unprotect feature is not available because there is no way to know how many places the study is located on the system. This is also true for system cached studies if you have multiple queryable devices on the network.
Ensure that you do not protect too many studies. New incoming studies could be lost if the cache is full of protected studies.

To protect or unprotect a study
On the Daily tab, click Study Manager.
Find the studies. In doing so, from the Location list, select Cached.
From the results list, select the study to protect or unprotect.
Click Protect/Unprotect Study.
