Finding studies using a barcode

If you have a barcode scanner attached to your station, you can find studies based on the information scanned from a form.

Ensure the barcode parameters are configured before scanning the barcode.

To find a study using a barcode

  1. Click inside the List area to ensure it has focus.

  2. Scan the barcode on the requisition form.

The search happens automatically, using the accession number, patient ID, or department visit number from the requisition form to find the correct study. The criteria used for finding the study by barcode does not need to be visible in the Search area.

Any open worklists are closed and the Simple or Advanced Search area is opened, depending on which was used last. The study is appended to the existing list in the List area.

If Active worklist is configured, when the last study is dictated you are returned to the List area and can scan the next barcode immediately.

If the barcode does not have a different character before and after the field, you cannot use barcodes; however, you can have the requisitions changed to have a stop and start character. Consult the PACS or RIS administrator for more information. To determine if start and stop characters exist in the barcode, open Notepad and then barcode a requisition. For example, if the accession number is 1234 and you do not see $1234^ but only 1234, the barcode does not have start and stop characters. If you do not have start and stop characters, you can still test that the barcodes would work by typing the configured start character, entering the Field value (ACN, PID, and so on by typing or barcoding), and then typing the stop character.
