Configuring barcode readers

At some sites, barcoded requisition forms drive the radiology workflow. Radiologists scan the barcodes on the requisition forms and IMPAX automatically searches for the study related to the order and displays the study in Search. From there, it can be cycled. If your site uses barcodes, you can configure how barcode values are used to find studies.

To configure barcode readers

  1. From the Configure drawer menu Configure drawer menu, select Stations.

    or

Or, from the List area bar, click the User ID menu Configure drawer menu and select Station Configuration.

  2. If in the Configure area, in the navigation pane, select a single station or station container to change all stations within that container.

  3. In the details pane, expand the General bar.

  4. Switch to the Barcode tab.

  5. From the Barcode Field list, select the barcoded value used to search for studies: Accession Number, Patient ID, or Department Visit Number.

  6. To indicate the beginning of the barcode, type the Barcode Start Character.

The default value is the at sign (@).

  7. To indicate the end of the barcode, type the Barcode Stop Character.

The default value is a hash (#).

The start and stop characters are ignored, ensuring that the scanned number matches the number stored in the database. For example, the start character may be a tilde (~).

If the barcode does not have a different character before and after the field, you cannot use barcodes; however, you can have the requisitions changed to have a stop and start character. Consult the PACS or RIS administrator for more information. To determine if start and stop characters exist in the barcode, open Notepad and then barcode a requisition. For example, if the accession number is 1234 and you do not see $1234^ but only 1234, the barcode does not have start and stop characters. If you do not have start and stop characters, you can still test that the barcodes would work by typing the configured start character, entering the Field value (ACN, PID, and so on by typing or barcoding), and then typing the stop character.

    Note:

    Note:

When closing the Image area using a wizard or script, use the Clears the Image area, activates the List area, and sets the focus in the List area script. This scripts also sets the focus to the List area so barcoding will work without having to click in the List area.

  8. From the Barcode Action list, select where and how IMPAX displays the study:

    • Query—adds the study to the search results of the List area

    • Query and add to cycle list—places the study at the end of the Image area cycle list.

    • Query and add to cycle list with relevant priors—places the study along with its relevant priors at the end of the Image area cycle list.

    • Add to cycle list and make the study active—places the study at the end of the Image area cycle list and makes the study active.

    • Add to cycle list with priors and makes the study active—places the study along with its relevant priors at the end of the Image area cycle list and makes the study active.

  9. If in the Configure area, the changes are saved automatically when you switch context.

    or

Or, if in the Station configure dialog, click OK.

The barcode reader is configured for the selected station or station container.
