You can enable lossy compression on an a station image cache as needed. You can also modify the compression ratios that apply when images in that cache are compressed.
If using the Mitra lossy wavelet compression format, you can set three compression ratios: one for 8-bit monochrome images, one for monochrome images greater than 8 bit, and one for color images.
JPEG compression uses a Q (for Quality) Factor compression.
To modify compression setting values for stations or modalities
On the Setup tab, click Network Management. ![]()
Switch to the Image tab.
To open the Compression Panel, click the
button.
From the list at the bottom of the dialog, select a station or modality compression setting to modify.
Modify the appropriate compression ratios:
For wavelet compression, modify the compression values for 8 Bit Mono, >8 Bit Mono, and Color images.
The compression ratio defines the amount of compression applied; for example, a compression of 20:1 means that the image is compressed to a size 20 times smaller than the original image. Smaller images have lower file size.
For JPEG compression, modify the Q Factor values. Recommended values are provided in Recommended Q Factor settings.
The lower the Q Factor, the higher the compression but the lower the image quality. The lowest Q Factor that can be applied is 50.
![]() | CAUTION! Increasing the degree of lossy compression (by decreasing the quality factor, or Q Factor) could decrease the quality of images to the point where it is perceptible, making the images unsuitable for diagnostic interpretation (primary or comparison). This is of particular concern when enabling lossy archiving and, therefore, requires extreme caution. |
