Troubleshooting: After installing an earlier version of Java, Administration Tools will not start

Issue

After installing an earlier version of Java, as prompted, Administration Tools do not start.

Details

A workstation that already has Java JRE 1.4.2_05 installed is nevertheless prompted to install JRE 6u10, with this message:

Security Warning: the application requires an earlier version of Java,
Do you want to continue?

Proceeding with the install as prompted causes a conflict that prevents the Administration Tools from starting.

Solution

When prompted to install an earlier version of Java, click Cancel.

or

Uninstall the previous version of Java 1.4.2_05.
