IMPAX 6.5.1 Client Knowledge Base: Extended > Performing quality control > Changing images associated with a study
Segmenting a study means breaking or copying a single study into multiple studies for one patient. Cloning is a specialized form of segmenting that assigns an image of the performed study to more than one scheduled study.
![]() | Note: Within a multiple cluster environment, any structural changes such as those caused by segment are not synchronized with the rest of the clusters in the enterprise. |
Scout images
Scout images can be referenced by one or more images or series in a study. However, when segmenting a study you do not need to determine which studies to place the scout images in as IMPAX automatically detects which images reference each scout image. For example, you want to segment a study into three studies (study_1, study_2, and study_3) and the original study has scout images associated with it. If a particular scout image is referenced by one or more images/series in study_1 and study_3, IMPAX automatically associates the scout image to both of those studies.
To segment one study into multiple studies
In the List area, use Advanced Search to find the study to be segmented.
In the search results, select the study to be segmented.
From the Advanced Search bar menu

![]() | Note: To segment, you must select the original study's order and select the images to associate with this order. Otherwise, the selected images are cloned (copied) to the new Orders. |
Click Segment.
A floating Segment palette appears in the Image area, displaying the order list and Segment and Cancel buttons. Symbols appear in the first column of the order list—a different one for each order. If there are any undisplayable DICOM objects, they will be included here.

Click the study images to associate with the selected order.
To select consecutive images, Shift + click the first image, navigate to the last image, and Shift + click on it.
You can also select a series to segment.
The symbol used to mark the selected images matches the one displayed in the first column of the Segment palette for the selected order.
Repeat steps 9 and 10 for any remaining orders. You can associate the same image with more than one order.
Click Segment.
The images are either segmented or copied depending on what orders were selected in step 7.
Existing key image notes, voice comments, GSPS objects, CC objects, and CAD Mammo SR will not be copied or moved.
![]() | Note: If some images in the study are not selected for segmentation, you are warned that the unselected images are deleted. |
Respond to any warning or error messages as needed.
To close the Segment palette, click Cancel.
