Troubleshooting: Error message on image import

Issue

When trying to import a BMP or JPEG image, I get an unsupported file format error message.

Details

Not all types of BMP and JPEG images can be imported. Only the following are supported:

Solution

To find out whether the BMP or JPEG you are trying to import is supported

  1. In Windows Explorer, right-click the file name.

  2. Select Properties.

  3. In the Properties dialog, switch to the Summary tab.

  4. Under Image, check the Bit Depth and Color Representation values against the list above.

If the file is not supported, you can convert it to a supported format in a graphics program—even a basic program such as Windows Paint.
