Specialty rules are used to group studies applicable to particular specialties. For example, all head studies could be grouped for specialty Neurology.
External specialties
External specialties are areas where departments outside of Radiology also have a primary role in diagnosis. To address the needs of these departments, modifiers may be appended to RIS procedure codes. For example, "-PED" may be added to the code for all patients under a certain age, for a Pediatrics specialty.
So a CT HEAD-PED that comes in may match two specialties. The radiology specialty match applies to the CT HEAD portion of the string. (%HEAD%) The external specialty match applies to the -PED portion of the string. (%-PED%).
