As part of performing a cold backup, for example, the Oracle database needs to be shut down and started up. Carefully time such activities to minimize site disruption.
To shut down and start up the Oracle database
Log in as the oracle user.
To shut down the Oracle database, type dbshutmvf.
To start the Oracle database, type dbstartmvf.
