Mapping from enterprise LDAP servers: Key concepts

If you have an existing LDAP server in the IT department of your site, you can map the users and groups from that server into the users and roles in IMPAX.

While you should set up the role hierarchy to match the PACS needs, you may want to take into account the structure of the enterprise LDAP server controlled by the IT department when planning.

For example, the enterprise LDAP server contains one large group called Physicians. For IMPAX, however, different physicians have different PACS needs. The majority of doctors in the Physicians enterprise LDAP group are clinicians that use the PACS to view the reports and images of the patients they have referred for radiology studies. But a sub-set of the doctors, such as the radiologists and orthopaedists need a different set of IMPAX licenses, permissions, and preferences from clinicians.

So, when you are defining roles and users, you can set up roles something like the following:

Then, you can map the Physicians IT group to the Clinicians role. Not all clinicians use the PACS system, so only when a user from the Physicians enterprise LDAP group logs into IMPAX will he or she appear in the IMPAX role hierarchy in the Configure area - Users and Roles section.

Each radiologist may require specific preferences. So, you can create the Radiology role, and then create all the radiology users in that role. After that, you can map specific users from the IT LDAP server into those IMPAX users. You can repeat the same activity for the orthopaedists.
