Roles and users can inherit their preferences from their parent roles. Roles and users that inherit all of their preferences from a parent role are gray in the navigation pane on the Configure area - Preferences section. Roles and users that have custom preferences are white. If required, you can overwrite these custom preferences with those used by a parent role.
