Troubleshooting: Image orientation differs between IMPAX and the Orthopaedic Application

Issue

When I launch a flipped or rotated image from IMPAX in the Orthopaedic Application (MediCAD), the image does not appear with the same orientation.

Details

Image orientation details are stored in the DICOMheader. When you change the orientation of an image in IMPAX, the manipulation details are stored and transmitted by IMPAX through DICOM private tags, which the Orthopaedic Application does not interpret. As a result, the Orthopaedic Application receives and displays the original (non-flipped) image. If no laterality markers appear on the image to indicate original orientation, the differences in displayed orientation can be misinterpreted.

Solution

If possible, we recommend that image laterality markers always be applied at image acquisition to avoid possibility of confusion.

CAUTION!

CAUTION!

When viewing images without laterality markers, however, you must understand that IMPAX rotations and flips are not interpreted by the Orthopaedic Application. Template planning must never be based on this difference in orientation.
