Configuring a station for serial dictation

Lanier and RTAS are serial dictation systems, in which a handset connects to the workstation via a COM port to transmit the report data. If available on workstations at your site, you can configure IMPAX Client to work with them.

To configure a station for serial dictation

  1. From the Configure drawer menu Configure drawer menu, select Stations.

    or

Or, from the List area bar, click the User ID menu Configure drawer menu and select Station Configuration.

  2. If in the Configure area, in the navigation pane, select a station on which a Lanier or RTAS handset is connected.

  3. In the details pane, expand the Image Area bar.

  4. Switch to the Serial Dictation System tab.

  5. From the Interface Type list, select Lanier or RTAS.

  6. From the COM Port list, select the port the handset is connected to.

Ports already assigned to devices such as the JL Cooper Jog are preceded by the name of the Configure area tab where these ports are assigned.

  7. Define the format of the data sent by the dictation handset. Ensure that all options correspond to the values for the commercial device being used for dictation.

    1. From the Baud Rate list, select the number of signal level changes per second in a line.

    2. From the Parity list, select Even, Mark (negative voltage), None, Odd, or Space (positive voltage).

A parity bit follows the data bits in the character frame as a simple means of error checking.

    3. From the Data Bits list, select a valid value between 4 and 8.

The order of transmission is from least significant bit (LSB) to most significant bit (MSB). To interpret the data bits in a character frame, read from right to left, and read 1 for negative voltage and 0 for positive voltage.

    4. From the Stop Bit list, select 1, 1.5, or 2.

The stop bits are the last part of a character frame. These bits are always represented by negative voltage. If no more characters are transmitted, the line stays in the negative (Mark) condition. The transmission of the next character frame, if any, is heralded by a start bit of positive (Space) voltage.

  8. If using RTAS, from the Field to Send list, select which value to transmit to IMPAX: Accession Number or Order Number.

  9. If using Lanier, set the following options:

    1. To support multiple accession numbers per report, select the Perform Modality Worklist Lookup checkbox.

    2. To truncate long identifiers to the Maximum Patient Identifier Length and Maximum Study Identifier Length values, select the Truncate Identifiers checkbox. From the Justification list (in the right-hand column), select whether to truncate values from the Left or Right.

    3. In the Maximum Patient Identifier Length field, type or select a value between 1 and 999 for the maximum length of the patient identifier.

  10. To pad short identifiers to the specified maximum length, clear the Trim Identifiers checkbox. If Trim Identifiers is cleared and if using Lanier, in the Pad Character field, type or select a value between 0 and 255 to represent the character to add.

If using RTAS, 32 (space character) is used when Trim Identifiers is cleared.

  11. In the Maximum Study Identifier Length field, type or select a value between 1 and 999 for the maximum length of the study identifier.

  12. In the Start of Message Character and End of Message Character fields, type or select a value between 0 and 255 to place at the start and end of the message before it is transmitted. If using Lanier, also type or select the Second Start of Message Character value in the same range.

  13. In the Pause Between Messages field, type or select a value between 0 and 9999 for how long in milliseconds to wait before transmitting another message.

  14. From the Default DICOM Modality Worklist Provider AE Title list, select the name of the HIS or RIS station to query for accession numbers.

  15. If in the Configure area, the changes are saved automatically when you switch context.

    or

Or, if in the Station configure dialog, click OK.

Dictation can now be performed at the configured workstation.
