When creating or editing a report in online recognition mode, the embedded Microsoft Word can function in one of two states: edit mode or recording mode. When starting a reporting session, Microsoft Word is always in edit mode.

Edit mode
Microsoft Word mode characterized by the following:
A green square outlines the embedded Microsoft Word.
Allows text entry using typing.
Allows access to Microsoft Word specific formatting functions (font, alignment, lists, and so on).
Recording mode
Microsoft Word mode characterized by the following:
A red square that outlines the embedded Microsoft Word.
Allows text entry using dictation.
Does not allow typing or using Microsoft Word specific formatting functions.
