TCP/IP network considerations

After an IMPAX station is installed on-site, the station must know about the other devices it communicates with.

Network communication is two-way. Data flows through layers of physical connections, network interfaces, software ports, and applications. You must be consistent identifying these layers with your entries in the host files and the Administration Tools. The following information is required for all new stations or devices in IMPAX.

Information Definition
IP address The Internet Protocol address is a numeric address that identifies the station to other TCP/IP devices on the network. IP addresses are entered in the /etc/hosts file on IMPAX.

Hostname

The hostname is a common alphanumeric alias for the IP address. IMPAX uses conventions for the various types of stations (os, as, rs, ts). Do not change the hostname of an IMPAX station unless you are absolutely certain of the steps needed to update the database.

You can also edit the /etc/hosts (on UNIX) or winnt/system32/drivers/etc/hosts (on Windows) using any text editor. However, the information in the Network Manager must match the information in the host file exactly.

Port Port numbers are assigned to the various processes that run on IMPAX stations. IMPAX listens for DICOM on port 104.
AE Title The Application Entity Title is the DICOM name that is assigned to each IMPAX station, DICOM printer, and DICOM imaging modality. The AE Title defines the device as a valid DICOM source or target.
Alias The alias is any name that you want to call the station. It can be any common name that describes the machine or its location in the hospital.
Site prefix The site prefix is a unique ID (UID) root that defines the organization, country, hospital number, and specific location where the workstation is installed. The site administrator assigns this number based on ISO guidelines.
