Enabling OCR for acquisition stations

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the recognition of printed or written characters by a computer. If a modality generates images into the system but not enough information about a study is sent, OCR templates read information directly off the burned demographics. An OCR template is the definition of the size and shape of the characters, together with a layout that indicates the position of the characters on the image.

For older modalities, which are not capable of sending their images via DICOM, IMPAX can use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to read the burned-in demographics from images acquired with capture devices such as the Agfa MG3000.

To enable OCR for acquisition stations

  1. On the Setup tab, click Source Manager.Source Manager

  2. Switch to the Acquisition tab.

  3. From the list at the bottom of the manager, select the station to configure.

  4. Select the Enable OCR checkbox.

  5. In the OCR Layout field, type the layout for the OCR.

These layouts are used to define how the OCR fields are read on the images. The system searches /usr/mvf/etc/ocr (on AS3000 systems) or C:\mvf\etc\ocr (on AS300 systems) for the matching template name.

  6. From the Patient Name list, select the data type for the patient name attribute—possibly Name.

Data type options for this and the other attributes are Alphabetic, Alphanumeric, Decimal, Identifier, Name, Numeric, and Text.

  7. From the Patient ID list, select the data type for the patient ID attribute—possibly Identifier.

  8. From the Accession Number list, select the data type for the accession number attribute—possibly Numeric.

  9. From the Study Description list, select the data type for the study description attribute—possibly Text.

  10. Click Save. Save
