There are three distinct aspects of integration:
Synchronization: This describes the state of two applications being synchronized to review the same data. Synchronization is an internal state; it is not visible to the user. For TalkStation–IMPAX integrations, synchronization makes sure that you are dictating in TalkStation on the image currently displayed in IMPAX.
Visibility: This describes the state of being visible to the user. When an application is visible ("on top") it does not necessarily mean that application has focus.
Focus: This describes the state of being the active application, or the application that is receiving commands from the user. An application does not have to be visible to have system focus; it can be obscured by another window, but still be the application that is currently receiving commands. Usually, on Windows systems, an application's title bar demonstrates whether it has focus: if it is colored (usually, blue) the application has focus; if it is gray, it does not.
Synchronization options
The synchronization options in IMPAX determine how TalkStation is to be synchronized with the IMPAX image area.
IMPAX Dictate Study icon is the default, and means that TalkStation will synchronize with IMPAX when you click the Dictate Study icon in IMPAX.
Start dictation action means that TalkStation will synchronize with IMPAX when a dictation starting action is performed (clicking or saying Start Dictation, pressing the SpeechMike Record button, or clicking the Dictate Study icon in IMPAX).
Multiple accessions can be synchronized to TalkStation only by clicking the Dictate Study icon in IMPAX.
Study navigation means that TalkStation will synchronize with IMPAX when a new study is opened in the image area from the cycle list.
To synchronize IMPAX with the order opened in TalkStation:
In TalkStation, search for and open a report for which you want to see the associated images.
With a study loaded in the IMPAX image area, right-click the Dictate Study icon and select Sync From Dictation System.
IMPAX loads the study based on the order that is currently loaded in TalkStation.
Visibility options
The visibility options in IMPAX determine when the TalkStation window is made visible during the workflow.
After login means TalkStation will be visible immediately after login and continuously during dictation.
![]() | Note: If at some point during the dictation you toggle TalkStation to the background, that action overrides your original selection of having it always visible. |
After opening study means TalkStation will become visible immediately after opening a study.
When beginning dictation is the default, and means that TalkStation will be visible when a dictation starting action is performed (clicking or saying Start Dictation, pressing the SpeechMike Record button, or clicking the Dictate Study icon in IMPAX), and will be hidden when the next study is opened.
When ending dictation to allow for review means TalkStation is not visible during dictation, and only becomes visible after a dictation ending action is performed (clicking or saying Stop Dictation, or pressing the SpeechMike Stop button).
![]() | Note: There is an exception to the When beginning dictation and When ending dictation to allow for review option behavior, in the case of multiple logins. If Allow multiple logons is selected in the TalkStation System Preferences Security tab, and the user logs in to a second IMPAX - TalkStation integrated workstation while still logged in to the first, TalkStation is not initially hidden. The user can toggle TalkStation using the microphone, or as soon as the user synchs the first report to TalkStation the visibility options will go back to normal. |
Focus
When TalkStation is integrated with IMPAX, the applications alternate focus, depending on the current user action. For the most part, IMPAX has focus, so you can manipulate images and dictate at the same time.
If during dictation you click in TalkStation to edit text, or click a TalkStation button, TalkStation takes focus until you click the mouse scroll wheel in the IMPAX window to return focus to the images. We recommend that you click the scroll wheel rather than the left or right mouse buttons, to avoid accidental image manipulation.
Voice commands do not cause TalkStation to take focus.
